Home Truths

I just started up my grooming biz from home and could really use some advice.

I’ve had a few lovely clients already, which is exciting, but now I’m kinda stuck on how to keep it all moving. How do you get more regulars and keep them coming back?

What did you do when you were starting out that worked? Anything you wish you did sooner? Or stuff you’d tell me to avoid? Would love any tips or stories you’ve got. Thanks heaps!

Well, look at you - first few clients through the door and already wondering how to keep the party going. Love that for you.

Starting a home salon is a bit like baking a pavlova - it looks simple, but one wrong move and it all collapses into a sad, sticky mess. Lucky for you, I’m here with the good china and the good advice.

Here’s the tea, darling:

1. You can't grow if nobody knows you exist.
Stick your name everywhere short of a toilet cubicle. Vets, cafés, dog parks, Facebook groups - you want them seeing you so much they think you're a Kardashian.

2. Make ‘em talk.
The best marketing you’ll ever have is a wagging tail and a gushing owner. A cute bow, a sniff of cologne, a treat at pick-up - doesn’t cost much, but it gets tongues wagging faster than bingo night at the bowls club.

3. Don't be a ghost.
Send appointment reminders. Say thanks. Wish the dog happy birthday. Pretend you care about their cat. It's called service, sweetheart, and it works.

Now, mistakes to avoid (because Barb's made them all so you don’t have to):

  • Charging like you’re running a charity fundraiser.

  • Taking every nutter and nightmare that calls.

  • Hiding behind a logo like you’re on the run from the law. People buy people, not clip art.

And one more thing:
If a client gives you the ick, listen to your gut. Better to have an empty table than a full day of regrets.

You’ve got the skills. Now get out there and hustle like your rent depends on it -because it probably does.

All the best, possum! Barb-bye!
