How to Up-skill in Dog Grooming at Home

Dog grooming has evolved significantly since its humble beginnings. We're talking about the Elizabethan era, where paintings—not photographs—serve as our best evidence that dog shearing was a thing. We can thank the French for the first signs of ‘pet-styling’ as an art form, with primped poodles paraded through the streets of Paris in the late 1700s.

Fast forward to today, and it's hard to ignore how far the industry has come and the endless possibilities at our scissor-tips. However, with these possibilities come increased owner expectations. The once popular plain and simple #7F shave-offs are now few and far between, replaced by their more time-consuming cousins in fanciful fields such as Asian Fusion and extravagant teddy bears.

So, how does a groomer keep up in the industry? The answer is continued education and upskilling.

Before you shout at your computer screens, “But igroomhub, there are only so many hours in a workday!” we want to let you know that we absolutely understand this, and we hear you! In fact, it’s one of the main reasons we created our online tutorial platform in the first place, back in 2017.

Through the igroomhub Professional Dashboard, you have access to ‘Advanced’ tutorials across all breed groups with expertise from industry leaders, allowing you to learn after hours and at your own pace. As our industry continues to evolve, we continually release new content on the most recent and on-trend techniques, so be sure to check back frequently for new tutorials!

When it comes to the art of dog grooming, hands-on practice and experience are invaluable. However, not everyone has access to a dog at home, so we have included tutorials on working with model dog heads, which are available for purchase through the groomers store. We also provide the latest news on upcoming online and in-person seminars via the events page.

If we dare take a moment to switch our groomer hats for scholar caps, Ernest Hemingway once said, “There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” To simplify, old mate Ernest was highlighting the importance of self-improvement rather than trying to outdo the groomer next to you. So, in your upskilling journey, we encourage you to celebrate your learnings, recognize your self-growth, and if there happens to be a groomer you admire, don't hesitate to ask them questions!

We wish you all the best in your further education, and if there is something you’d like to see in our advanced tutorials or professional development courses that isn’t available yet, just shoot us an email. We have plenty of exciting things in the works already!

With love,

igroomhub
