Matted Dogs

Matted coats, whether they are double, straight or curly can be very difficult to manage physically, technically and sometimes also emotionally.

There are times when clipping is your only option. Caution must be taken to ensure the blade you use is not too hot or short.

The use of conditioners, de-tangle sprays and quality brushes and combs will assist with de-matting a coat. You can see tutorials on dematting without clipping in the Advanced Techniques section of the Groomerverse.

Spend time with your client to ensure the dog does not return to you in a matted state. This is a good time to re book the client and do some up-selling of products you may have. Check out our matting brochure on our Operations and Resources page.

The videos below all contain matting on various breeds in various states.

Wet Clipping the Matted Coat

Have you ever wondered what wet clipping is?

Love it or hate it, it's a thing! Here Sue Wright demonstrates how to safely remove matts from a clean, wet coat.

The same bathing process applies: 2 shampoos and a deep conditioner, only this time, there is no drying - just a towel dry. As Sue explains, the tight mats are often pushed further away from the skin, allowing easy access for a #7fF

It is important to keep the dog warm and work quickly when doing this. Sue has a salon in Queensland. If you are in cooler states, this may not be a good option for the dog all year round.

The video is filmed in portrait, but it will lightbox out for easier viewing when clicked.
