Chow Chow

Grooming a Chow Chow can be very challenging. The Chow is often shy of strangers and has a reputation for being aggressive to other dogs. While this is not the case with all Chow Chow’s, care must be taken when grooming and managing these dogs in the salon environment.

Do not be alarmed when looking in the mouth of a Chow, they do have blue tongues and gums! This is simply due to a pigmentation gene, like the gene that determines our colour of skin.

  1. The Bath

These dogs have extremely thick and dense coats. Here Nicky demonstrates the importance of thoroughly wetting the coat.

Watch each stage carefully. It is important to follow these steps to achieve a speedy and successful groom.

2. The Dry

High velocity drying is a great way to remove unwanted hair gently and effectively. Moving the dryer slowly over the coat, you can see into the skin. Focus your pin brush on tangled or matted hair.

AVOID: By placing the high velocity dryer too close to the skin, you may blow ‘whip knots’ into the coat. This doubles your workload!

3. Groomout and Scissor Work

Some Chow Chow owners prefer the pants and rough pulled in. Nicky demonstrates 2 different styles of pant trims.

Correct tool choice for grooming out and the use of grooming sprays are also demonstrated.
