Learning the basics of the Poodle Points with Zemo and Colleen
Poodle Face
Colleen provides a step-by-step guide on how to shave a poodle's face. She discusses the specific areas to shave, the appropriate blade to use, and safety precautions. Colleen demonstrates techniques for shaving around the eyes, nose, and mouth while avoiding cuts or irritation, and also explains how to create straight lines and address cowlicks.
-
• Shaving a poodle face on a toy poodle involves shaving from the corners of the eyes to the nose, from the outside corner of the eye towards the top of the ear canal, and from the bottom of the ear canal opening down the throat.
• It is important to be cautious around the bottom and top eyelids and the lip to avoid cutting them with the clippers.
• Pulling back the lip helps create a straight line for shaving.
• The recommended routine is to start from the corner of the eyes to the nose and clear off the whole front of the muzzle, then move to one side and then the other.
• The recommended blade for shaving a poodle face on a pet dog is a ten blade.
• Shaving should be done in different directions to achieve a smooth finish.
• It is important to be gentle and not apply too much pressure with the clippers to avoid grazing the skin.
• Folding the ear back without pulling it is important for creating a clear line from the corner of the ear to the outside corner of the eye.
• Two techniques for shaving the triangle in front of the ear are scooping towards the face or pulling back to maintain a straight line.
• The final step is to assess and tidy up the V shape on the neck and ensure it is centered.
Poodle Feet
NOTES
-
• Poodle feet are shaved feet that go up to the second knuckle or around the metacarpal pad.
• Safety precautions should be taken when shaving poodle feet, especially avoiding the webbing between the toes.
• The recommended blade for shaving poodle feet is a ten, but for show dogs or dogs with thick coats, a 15, 30, or 40 blade may be used.
• Mini trimmers are generally set to a 40 blade for poodle feet.
• The first step is to clear out the pad and the v-shaped area between the toes.
• Shave a little bit up the back of the foot to help set the line for the poodle foot.
• When shaving the poodle foot, start from the top of the toes and go towards the back, avoiding the webbing.
• Ensure that the clippers get into the tip of the nails for a clean foot.
• The bend in the joint of the foot should align with the back of the pad and the top line of the poodle foot.
• To shave between the toes, spread the toes and go up the inside of each toe, avoiding the webbing. -
• Shave the top of the foot and clear out the hair between the toes.
• Control over clippers is important for precision.
• Protect the webbing of the foot with fingers.
• Check the nails and overall appearance of the foot.
Poodle Tail
-
• Clear off the hair around the anus, shaping it like a Christmas tree.
• Shave the sides of the tail, using hand and thumb as a guide.
• Be careful not to scoop off the long hair needed for the tail pompom.
• Create a V shape where the tail joins the body for a natural look.
• Goal is to clear the tail to the level just past the anus.
• Maintain a naked poodle band around the tail.
• Create a curved shape on the tail band.
• Lift the tail to ensure a smooth transition from the body.
