Four Square!

Your dog’s head and tail carriage starts from grooming on the table. While grooming, your poodle should be four square - that is, standing on the table as they would be stacked or standing on the ground, as in the show ring. The head and tail should be in the same place at all times. Your poodle will learn to hold their shape if you consistently do this. This helps with trimming and should transfer into the show ring.

Nothing will ruin your trim faster than your dog not standing in the perfect position! They should always look as if they are being presented to the judge. Do not let them lean!
Four square is from all angles - even from the back! No matter where you are trimming, if you think it is not important that they are standing four square, you are wrong!

Poodle Prep Conclusion - Really Just the Beginning!

Having the proper technique in force drying, hot drying, clipping and combing is fundamental for any of the next steps with your poodle. Make sure after the dry that you follow the line combing technique, which was explained previously.

Don’t forget that the way you train your poodle to stand four square and hold their shape is not only crucial for making sure your trim is perfect, but that this will transfer into how your poodle carries themselves in the show ring.
