Skin Structure and Hair Growth

Dogs have a different hair type to us humans, in-fact, they have fur!

While humans have one hair per follicle, dogs and cats have multiple hairs per follicle, hence, the term fur. There are 3 phases of hair growth, Anagen – active growth, Telogen – resting and Catogen – in between. Knowing how to manage these 3 phases is crucial in maintaining a healthy coat.

As well as hair being a window to the general overall health of a dog, the skin is also important. Skin is the largest organ on the dogs body. Nutrition, regular grooming, shampoos and conditioners help maintain the skin in good order.

In this video we also look at three key layers to the skin. The epidermis – outer layer of the skin, the Dermis – which supports the epidermis and the Subcutis – the innermost layer of the skin.
