Money Saving Tips for Grooming Businesses

With the cost of almost everything rising, it's time to look at how our businesses can save some money. Here’s 10 easy tasks you can action immediately.

1. 'I'd like to talk to you about Jesus Christ, and your power bills!'

Are you on the very best rate for your services? If you or a staff member have a spare hour, spend some time doing research or make a few calls, you never know, it might save you big $$$

2. Spending money you don't have?

Create a separate tax saving or GST account so you can see clearly what you can and cannot spend. Transferring money weekly will help you budget for tax time. Work out the ball park figure, set it to auto or scheduled transfer, and forget it even exists til you need it for tax.

3. Insurance

We all need it. Is your insurance policy aligned with your business needs? Shop around for the best price and coverage possible.

4. Wages - yes, we all have to pay them, but does that mean YOU have to?

a) Outsourcing bookeeping and paying wages can free you up to make more money. Look into some agencies who specialise in that field.

b) There are some fabulous schemes available for traineeships. Take a look at this site for more info. https://www.dewr.gov.au/australian-apprenticeships/apprenticeship-support

5. Stock control

a) Have you looked at your expiry dates? Putting stock on sale is a great way of recouping costs if it is not selling.

b) Placing larger orders to avoid extra delivery charges can also help. If you have friends who own businesses, (it could even be your local Vet) have you thought about creating a buying group? This can save on delivery and bulk orders may receive a discount.

6. Loans!

If you have an existing business loan or car loan, are you on the best rate? Spending an hour to find out might just save you!

7. Rent

a) If you are due for a rent restructuring, or an increase, can you negotiate a deal that works for you?

b) Subletting is a good way of getting some extra bang for your buck! Working with a puppy school, walker or dog trainer can be beneficial to both parties. It creates a sense of community around your business and offsets your rent. Always check that your landlord is ok with this.

8. Staffing

Are you getting the best out of your staff? Or are they producing 5 hours of work in 8? Keeping an eye on productivity can save you big dollars. We do not want to overload our employees but do they have daily targets? Are they being held accountable for them?

9. Outsourcing cleaning

This can be a very cost effective way to maintain your sanity and create a sense of pride and professionalism to your business. Staff do not see what we see, and let’s be honest, it is not their passion. Having a cleaning company employed once a fortnight may not just save you money, but also sanity!

10. Managing long weekends and major breaks

We all love a break, a proper break. Have you considered closing for a day or half day once a month? This can be great for team morale and for you! Spend some time working out how to achieve this and still get the same amount of dogs groomed in a week or month.
